"twinturbobmw" (twinturbobmw)
01/11/2014 at 19:08 • Filed to: Buildsheet | 1 | 44 |
What buildsheet is about is choosing a car and finding parts to create a car meeting the requirements and budget. (e.g. lemons car, $500) You are free to "buy" any cars and parts however I might add in little touches such as "The car must have less than 120hp stock. Or parts must be 50 US state legal." But because this is the first Buildsheet, I'll leave it open to just a topic and budget. I encourage you to modify the car to your personality and what you like. Make the car your own. Here's the criteria:
Topic: Standing Mile
Budget: $40,000
Extra Rules: The car must not be made in North America or Asia. The car must remain naturally aspirated.

Question, the car itself can't be USDM or JDM but are we allowed to swap in motors from either of those countries or must it stay non-US/Japan?

Add some DIY aerowork and I think we have a winner if we're allowed American engine swaps.

What do I win?
I'd probably take shave some weight by removing the dual fuel tanks in the back and stripping whats left of the interior. The blower would be fake like it is in the movie. It just looks really cool. I'm positive you could find a project Falcon XB and build the motor for less than 40k.

Porsche 928 - $3000, no engine (EXTREMELY low drag coefficient for the money, already capable of 180 mph)
Junkyard 454, rebuilt - $2000
Bore, cylinder sleeves, and 427 Crankshaft to make it a high-revving 451. ~650HP @ 7000rpm (but not for very long...) on race gas. ~$9,000
Transmission and differential: ~$6000
Solid cam, new pushrods, new pistons, new valaves, high-RPM heads, $12,000
Tires, rims, and a few suspension tweaks: $3000
Mounts, aero, stripped interior, drivetrain components, and misc. swap stuff: $5000
Power: ~650 HP, 500-600 ft/lbs
Weight: ~2800 lbs (street legal, just very unsafe) or ~3400 lbs with full interior
Top speed: over 220-230mph
Likely a low-10 second car in the quarter mile and a 150mph+ trap speed, so with a drag coefficient that low (the 928 is really slippery) a 200mph standing mile time is not unreasonable.
Another $10,000 on forced induction /nos and you could be pushing 220-230mph in the standing mile easily, since the engine combo can touch 1000+ HP with moderate (~10 psi) boost.

I don't think any GT-R could be converted to RWD and use the viper engine for under $40,000. I'm assuming an old GT-R (R32/33) and even then, that plus the engine leaves you with about ~$15000-$20000 to do the entire swap, which would include a new transmission, supsension, engine bay, drive train, etc.

I completely forgot about the budget. My bad. How about a Juke with an LS swap?
GhostZ
> Brian Silvestro
01/11/2014 at 16:19 | 0 |
Unless you used a FWD transmission (bad idea) you'd have to rebuild the drivetrain again, since the Juke is setup for front transverse mounting. You might be able to just tear the whole engine out and mount the LS on the back with a custom transmission, but again, that's blowing the budget. Plus, the Juke's aerodynamics isn't really sorted out well.
If you're going to start with a Nissan car, go with a Z31 or Z32, they both are really slippery with high top speeds already, aren't too expensive, and can fit a number of different engines (or in the Z32's case, just upgrade the current one) pretty easily.

Oh yes. You custom-made this for me. Alright. To start, we can use my current car - 1988 E28 535i stick. Already own it, paid...very little for it. So that leaves me almost all of the 40k budget still. Its got M5 front suspension components already, I'd add Ground Control Coilovers, all new rear suspension mounts, links, and bushings. Fully built S38 engine swap with the 6 speed transmission. Turbo'd. Power M sport seats inside. All new audio and HVAC systems. Proper vintage HRE or BBS wheels. E34 M5 brakes. Euro front and rear conversions. Repainted in its factory color of Delphin Grey. V1 installed in the rear-view mirror. Hopefully capable of putting about 650 hp to the wheels, conservative goal.

For an Asian car (screw your rules): First Gen Honda Insight. Turbo LS motor (can be done for under $20k for maybe ~1500 hp. Only needs to last 2 miles). Lower it, Add some aero to keep it stable, done.
You want German? Get me a $500 bmw, add cage, same LS motor as above, and aero the fuck out of it.

Buy one Jaguar XJS V12 - $6,000
Spend $34,000 stretching that monster V12 as far as it can go. There's evidence that it can be bored and stroked to just a little over 10 litres! Saying that, apparently that's a low-rpm engine, so the shorter-stroke 8.4l would be more suitable.
Also, the 24v AJ6 head uses the same bore spacing and will fit with some modification.
So, we've got a 8.4 litre 48 valve V12 in a car that you can probably strip down to between 1200 and 1400kg. Considering Jaguar were able to get 730bhp out of a 7.0l 24 valve V12 in the XJR-12 , I think we could get pretty damn quick with +1.4l and 24 extra valves.
Monster.

Volkswagen Golf (whatever good used example can be bought for under $4k, early generation)
Rest of money to tube frame it to have the engine in the middle, putting the power to the rear with a 6 speed transaxle (out of a Porsche). Strip the interior to make it as light as possible.
Make a completely flat full length undertray.
Power and light weight, I don't see why this wouldn't be darn good at the standing mile.

Wait, seriously? I had no idea the jaguar V12 had so much room for bore!
Modern parts with the original stroke can touch 9000rpm on 6.3 liters! That's insane! If you can still flow air at those speeds, it's a 700HP N/A motor, like you claimed.
I wonder if you could swap one into a 240z... I mean, you can, but at what cost? http://jalopnik.com/5336153/1971-d…

That's part of the reason people swapping Jag V12s for Chevy 350s bugs me so much. The Jag V12 is a bonkers engine, and it's only really for convenience that people do it.
